Here are three quotes about this week’s video.
Ski Extreme movie documentary Steep:
What would become the most influential American ski film ever made.
Rob Story from Skiing in the documentary Steep:
Blizzard really made skiing seem like a dangerous sport(…).
It was just light years away from the typical American ski experience in the ’80s.
Greg Stump about Blizzard in Steep:
People went berserk and it just caught on like wildfire.
You know you ask people where they were when they first saw Blizzard of AAHHH’s and most people can tell you where they were. It’s like JFK getting shot or something?
As Friday Night Videos was a breakthrough in the commercialization of the music videos in the Eighties, another thing happened in that decade.
The combination of the ski movie, the music of the time and the skiing gave Blizzard of Aahhs a breakthrough for the ski movie and marked the start of a new wave of ski movies. It seemed fit that the first Friday Night Video on Ski Mad World would related to the Eighties, at least when it’s related to my World. I was in my early twenties when this movie came out plus I was really into music. This movie brought my two Worlds together like the Warren Miller movies of the time didn’t.
Here is the opening credit of Greg Stump’s Blizzard of Aahhs in which why this movie was made. One of the most important and best ski movies ever made in my opinion.
