There are generally two types of ski movies; the skiing action movies and comedies that feature skiing. Although this week trailer didn’t have the impact on skiing as the first installment of Friday Night Video, Blizzard of AAhhs, Hot Dog was a huge commercial success for this genre. Odds are that people that were teens and young adults in 1980s would have heard of Hog Dog, every few would have known about Blizzard. This would have been the case for in my friends.
Here is what Wikipedia has to say about it:
Hot Dog…The Movie is a teen sex comedy motion picture released in January 1984. The movie went on to gross over $17 million and became one of the iconic teen comedies of the 1980s.
The film stars Patrick Houser as Harkin Banks, a young and ambitious ski bum from Idaho who is determined to prove himself in a freestyle skiing competition at Squaw Valley. Along the way he teams with a pack of fun-loving incorrigibles (whose leader, Dan O’Callahan is played by David Naughton), picks up an Austrian arch-nemesis named Rudi (John Patrick Reger), and enters a love triangle with a pair of blondes, a young woman named Sunny and the more mature Sylvia Fonda (played by Playboy Playmate Shannon Tweed in one of her first major film roles).
Janet Maslin, writing in the New York Times, gave a generally positive review, describing the film as “light and less moronic than it might have been.”(New York Times 1984)
Here is the teaser from Hog Dog the movie, another classic in ski movies, although different.
