After last week’s Friday Night Video music mix of skiing in NYC, here is a classic of old time from the Thirties mixed with music from the 21st Century.
One of my favorite movies of all time, Der Weisse Rausch (White Ecstacy) by Arnold Fanck featuring Leni Riefenstahl and Hannes Schneider.
The following video clip is a montage of the ski action from the 1931 movie and music from 2006: Cocaine by Northern Lite.
You can buy it at the New England Ski Museum and support the museum at the same time.
Here is the information from the catalog.
White Ecstasy (The Ski Chase) DVD
1931, Black & White, 80 minutes
A vintage favorite featuring great European skiers at Hannes Schneider’s beloved St. Anton
The most famous (and last) of the Arnold Fanck/Hannes Schneider collaborations, this newly restored film co-stars Leni Riefenstahl, Guzzi Lantschner and Walter Riml. With new English subtitles and an original musical score, the story of a “foxchase” on skis unfolds on the pristine open slopes around St. Anton in Austria. The cast, the spectacular photography, and the remarkably extreme skiing by Europe’s best skiers make this the crown jewel of NESM’s vintage film video collection.
If you want to watch the whole movie, you can watch it here. On this version, the sound and image are out of synch and the German movie doesn’t have any English subtitles. The copy sold by the NESM is much better.
