Sunday River opened last October 29 for the fifth straight October. The only ski resort in the East to do so. The ski resort located Newry near Bethel, Maine has come a long way since it started operations on Locke Mountain in the 1959-60 season. The first resort in Maine to start snowmaking, it become a major trademark of their success.
Les Otten came over from Killington in 1972 when the Vermont’s had a control interest at the resort. In 1980 Otten would buy Sunday River from Killington and soon after he started a massive expanding of the resort onto the neighbouring peaks in order to complete with Killington. Both resorts competed for the New England and expanded their respective empires into other New England resorts. Eventually all these competing resorts would be all under the American Skiing Company.
At the time of this brochure in 2006-07, Sunday River was still part of ASC. At the end, the ASC empire collapsed and both ASC Maine resorts, Sugarloaf and Sunday River, would join Boyne Resort Group in 2008. Les Otten had tried to rebuy the resort, but wasn’t successful.
