Today was the Edelweiss Ski Team Fun Day, an end of year get-together. The plan is generally a BBQ slopeside, a few slalom gates, a fun times for the family and kids to get-together one last time to ski and celebrate another end of the race season.
This week’s Winter Hating Heatwave with temps around +25c changed that; from last Friday’s “it going fast” coverage to “where gone for the season” was surprising. I brought my skis as I had to drive up to Edelweiss, so why not bring the skis right? Daughter got her cast (which was removed at the operation) signed from the friends she didn’t see last time.
So instead of repeating last season get-together, we had a BBQ on the deck of an empty ski areas. The heatwave was over and today was the first day since last Saturday where the temperature didn’t beat the previous Daily Record high. Patches of snow and kids everywhere around the mountain.
I have looking at the snow on Chemin-des-Bois, Yodeler(snowpark), Zoomer, Strief and even the steepest tube run. A few decision had to be made: 1) Am I going to do this or be lazy? 2) Which skis a) New ones with an AT setup or b) old rock skis? 3) Where and what route?
The closest snow was in the tube park, but I wanted to longer climb. I got the skins on (first time since Pucon in September 2010) and when up to the summit. Managed to zigzag as there was a light rain falling, passed on sometimes on narrow ribbons of snow starting at 10 meters from the lodge. I passed over a short part of grass less than one ski length twice. I went up on the bottom part of Zoomer next to the snowpark and continued up on Yodeler (snowpark) to the summit. I looked around at the summit and it seem like a good walk to get to Strief, especially that its start off flat. Opted to ski down the top of Yodeler (where I skinned up) then hiked across to Zoomer. I had to remove my skis a second time on the descente, because I took the wrong stretch of snow with wasn’t continuous. These were good skis I was using, so no sliding on MRG (Mud, Rock and Glass) with these.
I only skied one run as I didn’t know if there was anyone left at the bottom at the BBQ due to the light drizzle and Morgane was at the bottom. I didn’t want to leave her there too long. There were still a few people around when I got into the lodge with ski boots full of mud.
Anyway, I was happy I was out.
