Update 3pm: No one is spinning today, but with the new snow, Seven Springs (Pennsylvania) which has been closed for weeks will spin tomorrow for one day only.
Update April 23, 2012:
Ottawa received 5 cm overnight. No one has been spinning lifts within 100km since March 21 when the Winter Hating Heatwave happened. Grass is green, leaves have started coming out, but if that March weather was a taste of Summer, this morning gave us some late Winter snow.
It’s ironic that one the first snow in town in weeks coincides with the first time since November that no one in the East is spinning today. Killington ended their season, yesterday, on April 22. Jay has joined Mont St-Sauveur at being closed midweek. For the fourth season in a row, both Jay Peak and MSS have been part of the latest to spin. It’s becoming a consistent habit. Last season Jay closed on May 15 one week after Sugarloaf. MSS lasted an extra weekend to closed on May 22, 2011.
Snow fell at Jay Peak and Mont St-Sauveur overnight, the only two ski areas in the East that might offer skiing next weekend.
Jay Peak talks about making the call on whether they’ll re-open sometimes midweek.
Mont St-Sauveur updated its website saying that they be open Saturday and Sunday.
Will they managed to make it to May? MSS did spin the previous 5 months of May, while Jay made it in the last 3. This season weather is nothing, but certain and May would seem far away, but right now, it would seem that the odds for at least one, if not both ski areas running next weekend would be pretty good right now.
As for bragging right, if Mont St-Sauveur opens next week, they will definitely have the longest ski season in the East. MSS opened for skiing on October 30, one day after Killington and Sunday River kicked it off.
