Many ski areas called it quits last weekend and only the diehard remain. A few ski areas that called it a season last weekend had most of its, if not all of their trails open. Places like Saddleback, Wildcat, Smokey in Labrador, Massif du Sud, Le Valinouet (never opened due to weather) and Mont Comi (which preceded its planed opening for April 27-28) made decision that were more base on economics than snow. The only place with a real crowd and lift lines didn’t charge for lift tickets; Sunday River closed with its annual Ski Mania.
Like a few ski areas the previous weeks, Mont Sutton was planning to close last Sunday, but the amount of snow and people asking them if they would going to re-open the following weekend got the ski area thinking of offering one more weekend.
BTW, the Tremblant webcams still showing top to bottom skiing on Expo and bottom South side still looks very skiable over 9 days after it’s closing date.
To contrast last year’s anomaly, we have more triple the amount of ski areas versus the number of ski trails open last year. 9 ski areas are looking to spin versus 3 trails that remained in the entire East this time last year. MSS and Jay were the only two still in the game; it was going to be Jay’s last weekend and the first time that no US Eastern ski areas were going to run lift in May in at least 35 years. The previous Spring 2011 they were 7 (Mt St-Sauveur, Miller, Jay, Sugarbush, Killington, Saddleback and Sugarloaf). Basically the same list are still tentative plus Blue Mountain on Georgian Bay (Ontario), Ste. Anne and the Sutton surprise; Saddleback being the only minus.
