Haynes and Jet shinning all the way across to Canada

After the previous day’s late start for what I thought was going to be my last day at Mont St-Sauveur and their last weekend of the season; I showed up at 7:30am for a meeting place in Brossard. The One, J’hais le damé durci and I were meeting up for a carpool for Jay Peak’s last day of the season.

An early start for Mother’s Day as some people had early evening plans. Killington was the only other ski area, besides MSS and Jay open this weekend. Each of them had roughly the same amount of runs open.

It was initially announced that Jay Peak would have three trails open this weekend; the normal late season Jet and Haynes on Stateside and the green Interstate serviced by the Metro Quad on the Tramside. As we were driving south towards the border, we could see Haynes and Jet shinning from afar.

We virtually parked in the liftline of the Jet Triple. It was wet and muddy, like a skiers’ Woodstock. The atmosphere of a great day at the hill was building up. People were parking and getting ready for some tailgating, eating, drinking, tanning and some skiing. Very different from a rain on a previous last day a few years ago.

The morning started with a low cloud cover and cool breeze, definitely not the hot Summer t-shirt type weather from the previous day at MSS: snow pants and vest it was. First down Jet then Haynes; the snow was soft corn, unlike the frozen salt snow from MSS the previous day. There was also Montrealer-Angel’s Wiggle that was official open which stopped just short walk from the Bonnie and Stateside Hotel or the Jet triple. The part of the snowpack had collapsed from the running water and melted leaving a giant trench in the middle of the trail. JLDD explored and bushwacked the trees between upper UN and Haynes while I skied and hoped on and between patches on Derrick’s. All on snow on this side were on the snowpiled Haynes and Jet.

The advantage of being parked virtual on the side of the trail is that we could drop layers when the sun came out and the temperature became to rise, we also stop to get some fuel (food and drinks). It didn’t take long to get around the open terrain, so next up about a hike up or skin up for The One towards Can-Am; no, we didn’t bother checking Interstate on Tramside. From our vantage point from high above at the top of Can-Am, we saw only one skier slowplowing. The mountain was quite as the action was all on Stateside’s two main trails. In fact there would have a few more skiing options as they were plenty of white all over the mountain. As most previous Jay May Trips, Can-Am was the cream of the corn. Real butter corn, pealing corn on the unskied bumps on continuous snow on the nice steep pitch.

This was a relaxing day as we soaked in the rays from the outdoor tables next to Stateside to eat our lunch drinking beer. The atmosphere was happening when we got back to the Jet. We found a line of snow between the trees in Kitzwood and I skied over dirt connecting the patches on Northway and Hell’s Crossing.

Back under the Jet, the smooth groomed corn had turned into moguls, skiing in shorts, jorts or bikini galore, beer drinking at the top and the bottom at the cars next to the BBQs, on the lift or having beer runs. There were some Famous and not so famous internet skiers from both side of border and various ski forums showed up on this beautiful. This was the day, the Mother of Closing Day Celebration. This wasn’t Woodstock, it was more like Cornapallooza!!!

Skiing on Velvet! \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

Just a simple TR just to say Wow!!!

Simply amazing groomed conditions. P.P.P.C. (Perfect Packed Powder Corduroy) on the two different runs I skied. Mind you the temperature was -26c in the morning with -39c windchill; the hill will remain in great shape as we received a bit of snow earlier in the week.

First race of the season, when I turned into the parking at 6:30pm it was a nice -28c.

Did maybe two warmup runs down Zoomer, the usual run for our race. Tonight we had a treat, the GS course was set on Streif.

Streif is pretty impressive trail for a recreational racer. Fun course.

One run for course inspection and one run free ski followed by my 3 timed runs. Not a single patch on ice even on the steep pitch, way better conditions than last Sunday a few miles south at Cascades.

No speed suits for tonight, but a few of us removed our big coats in order to impress and play mind games with our opponents. 😆

3 straight runs without a jacket, just a vest. Back to the top to get my jacket, I was about to get back on the HSQ…but I decided to call it a night for my toes (starting to freeze) and my back. In the bar at 9pm (for the awards and door prizes 8-[ ), got home at 11pm.

Satisfied of my night overall (times could have been better, but with the lack of skiing and back issue), my time was improving every run. Paid a beer for 0.23 slower than my rival. I was a bit stiff at first, but the back survived. Iced it when I got back home.

So for those keeping track, that’s 2 hours, 8 runs x 200m with 0 powder. \:D/

Ottawa Masters evening GS results

From the Ottawa Masters:

Speed Suit Rule
When the ambient temperature at the time of registration drops below -20 C, the use of speed suits shall be banned. Dress warmly. Women, however, are still encouraged to wear speed suits in the bar after the race.

Race Cancellation – Weather
Race will be cancelled if, at 15h00 on the day of the race, Environment Canada posts an ambient temperature of -28C (or lower) either at the http://www.weatheroffice.com web site, or at the 998.3439 info-line. It is the responsibility of the racer to check these sources on race day – Chances are Gary might not be able to post a cancellation notice on the web site by 15h00.

I wasn’t sure if the race was going to happen, notice Vorlage didn’t have any nights. Camp Fortune had lights also, I couldn’t really see Cascades on the drive up. I saw that Edelweiss didn’t opening the following night.

It wasn’t SUNday…it was RAINday. 8) 8) 8)

I was in Montreal on Saturday, so better to take advantage of it. Unfortunately the forecast was less than ideal. Rain everywhere…I hadn’t made my call on where to ski. The best lift served skiing option was the Loaf. The worst was MSS with 2 runs at $39. In the middle were the Bush and Jay. Three of them weren’t sure of opening on Sunday due to rain in the forecast. Sugarloaf was out of the question as it was too far with this weather and going solo. I had to wait until I got a confirmation on the phone that Jay was going to open. Got it at around 8:30am…Called MSS, no news – MIA. Left Montreal in a light drizzle.

After a long detour on Autoroute 10 (WTF was that???), I got into a virtually empty Stateside parking lot. I got changed and eat a sandwich as I got ready. As I headed out for the short walk to the Jet chair, I came face-to-face with a couple of FTO fanatical and future FIS skiers. One of them was going to change his skis. I wasn’t surprised to meet up with these hardcore skiers.

Okay, what is official open?

Here is the “Runs” down. 😉

1) Haynes/Mont L’Entrepide – First run, hood was doing down too low; couldn’t see much. Skiing in an aquarium feeling. Snow was pretty corny. 😛 The last time I skied this run was back in pre-lift October 06.

2) The Jet – Second run. Same type of Spring snow. Good coverage, however I never really like this trail. It’s a straight liftline trail.

Trail that wasn’t mentioned as being officially open, but it’s was open. Sign on top mentioned walking required.

3) Montrealer/Angel’s Wiggle/Paradise Meadows – 3rd run. Great coverage, harder surface, but still soft. Not many bare spots. Only walking was for the connection to the Jet triple.

Other trails:

4) Kitzbuehel – Branch on Skier’s Right. Harder surface bumps. Maybe 1-2 spot to walk or/and tight connection. Notice that the other branch on Kitzbuehel has better coverage. Connection walking back to Jet trail via Heaven’s Road. Greg and Salida saw me from the lift and mentioned that they’ll wait for me at the top.

5) Kitzbuehel – Branch on Skier’s Left. Did the way better side with FTOers and friends. Salida had changed his skis for some good old pair of Rossi 4S. Great…

6-7) Kitz Woods/Hell’s Crossing/Angel’s Wiggle – Great coverage, rotten and dirty snow, but fun obstacle course, especially the exit through the bushes onto Hell’s Crossing.

8 ) Derick Hot Shot/Mont L’Entrepide – Fun and bumps again. A few tight spots, but nothing major.

9-10) Kitz Woods/Hell’s Crossing/Angel’s Wiggle – again because it’s so much fun.

11) Montrealer/Catwalk(walking)/Northway(climbing on snow)/Upper and Lower Can-Am – A treat for the last run of the day. Can-Am. 😀 Coverage was almost continuous on Upper Can-Am. Nice hard Spring surface, not mush. Highlight of the day for all of us. Shared a beer at mid-run (thanks guys).

Lower Can-Am was more a connection on snow patches. I’m amazed how little rocks there is on the grass. Made it almost down to the bottom of the Bonnie chair without removing my skis. Okay, it included some no snow sliding.

Started skiing at noon and it’s stopped raining at my 8th run.

Great day, great fun and great companionship (almost sounds like a beer commercial). It was also closing day at Jay, so what is left?

First day of the 2006-07 season.
13th month in a row.

Question: Why have my only three days in October lifetime (2 days last year at Wildcat) probably been better than a pile of lifetime November days?

Answer: Powder and Fresh Tracks versus white ribbon of hard pack with a few thousand skiers.

The last snow event last weekend wasn’t an option for me due to previous engagement in Ottawa. However I was going to Montreal on Tuesday evening to see Dweezil and hoping [-o< for powderfreak’s forecast would come true. It didn’t seem like a sure thing, it was fairly warm and rainy.

I was also trying to confirm if Lucky Luke was going to take a day off from work also so that we could take that long-planned beer together. This was going to be my best opportunity for October turns without having to come back through Montreal for a possible event next weekend.

Lucky Luke gave me the call at 8am that morning and said that we should go at Jay and bypassing Sutton partially based on the area pics and webcam. After being stuck in traffic in Montreal, I finally arrived in Bromont roughly one hour later after I left the island.

I quickly transferred my gear into Luc’s van. I decided to only take my old Rossi 7SKs circa 1993 for the first time in 3 year with my old boots and leaving my B1s and current boots in the car. It was snowing at Lucky’s house (higher elevation), but mostly raining at the autoroute level. Flakes were flying once we got out of the autoroute (30 km) further east and started driving south. We were getting ready for the worst once we hit the border with only flakes falling and the ground still green (you have to understand the history behind our ski trips together across the border).

Border guard: “Where are you going?”
Lucky Luke: “Jay”
Bg: “Why?”
LL: “Hiking or/and skiing”

That’s it, the van is going to be turned inside out with sniffer dogs and we’re going to get tested for drugs and maybe something worst like strip searched with the plastic glove treatment. 😕

No, he believed us!!! I guess we do look like two crazed skiers and not two stoners (although the look can sometimes be mistaken by some). How can there be snow only 10 minutes away?

There wasn’t really any snow until we reached the Stateside parking lot. We parked near the Ski Patrol building. Luc said; ” Hey, this is where they put my foot in a box once.”

We were stoked. The runs were white, but not much snow. BUT we were going to ski, that wasn’t going to suck. Someone else arrived at the same time as us and didn’t need to get changed so after a talk, he started climbing.

SNOW REPORT:

The HIKE:

We were all set to go, Luc with his trekkers and skins, me with my hiking boots. 🙄

We started climbing Paradise Meadows (snow level increased from maybe 2 to 8 inches. Once we got at the bottom Northway, we saw the guy we had seen in the parking making some nice tele turns on the pitch. He had cheated, he got a ride up with someone.

Lucky “Super Quad” Luke was climbing much faster than I, so he climb to the top of the pitch and made a few turns while I was still climbing. We also saw two snowboarders make some turns on the same pitch. As I climbing Northway, Luc asked me: “Would you have liked if I would have lent you my snowshoes that are in the van?” 🙄 Now he tell me after climbing for maybe 30 minutes.

The Northway pitch had probably 8-10 inches. The climb continued after a small break near the entrance of Hell’s Wood. At that point I fetched my goggles in my backpack, reorganized my skis and taking a few pictures. The snow and the wind were blowing pretty hard at times and visibility wasn’t great. We could also hear the snowguns blowing in the distance, probably at the Tram Base.

After a short talk, we decided to turn toward Montrealer at the top of Stateside. There were a couple of 2 feet drift here.

Note to Santa: Trekkers and Skins would have been very useful on days like today.

At the top of Stateside, we met someone who had already made 4 runs toward the summit and had just moved over to Stateside for a last run. He mentioned that the snow was deep up there (I didn’t hear any amount). We had a quick lunch in first class settings (winter…wow 😀 ). The hike up took me about 90 minutes, the climb would have been much quicker with snowshoes or skins.

The SKIING:

First run (or Luc’s second) was down Haynes. The snow was wet (perfect snowman snow), not unlike a certain powder day in Whistler in the first week of April 1996. I had the same old skis and old boots back then.

Oh boy…how do we turn these 201 again in wet powder? I fell a few times in the first hundred feet. I don’t recall falling this much in a month for years, let alone a single run. 😕 However the next few turns, everything came back to me…. Retrostyle. 8) Luc was flying with his old Nordica. We skied 300 vertical meters (990 ft) all the way to the bottom of Haynes and before Mont L’Entrepide trail (which is a larger extension and flatter). It also had less snow. We were yelling like a bunch of maniacs.

“Super Quad” Luke started skinning straight up on Haynes while I started making a bootpack. Snowdepths on the upper third of Stateside probably varied around 1-2 feet. Let’s just say that it’s not easy climbing when suddenly your leg sinks down to your knee. This time Luc skied down Derrick Hot Shot while I was climbing. Only to stop before Willard (bottom half) and started joining me in my hike for a last run. The waterbars we’re somewhat filled in at the top, but you still had to be careful.

The last run was Derrick to Willard. Like for Haynes, conditions were amazing for October on the upper part, I only felt my skis touch the rocks once or twice. Conditions were definitely more marginal once you reached the Willard level with much less snow. Willard had a better coverage due to its sheltered twisting aspect compare to the larger Entrepide trail. I managed to make it back to the van with my skis (didn’t do much damage) while Luc removed his at the bottom of the run.

We had that long promised beer together while the Red Hot Chili Peppers were blasting through the speakers (what is it with our trip and the Peppers?). To celebrate a wonderful day and a great friendship. Cheers.

The music continued all the way back to Bromont. Once back in my car, it’s was time to listen to some Zappa again after the previous night 3 hour show and think that this was a great 24 hours.
