Lionel, Powderfreak, JoshFox and all the others were talking about the upcoming stormy weather. The finally long awaited storm for the snow starved Northeast mountains.
Is it true or will everyone be disappointed again?
Looking at a map and trying to figure out where it will hit and where I can go?
I can’t choke now on a trip to Vermont.

Got to Mad River Glen and everyone was there.
Looking to ride in a secret location.
Not the smartest thing to do when you’re solo and run into trouble.
Trying to get my head quiet from my problems.
Still a challenge to get out of the bed right now!!!

So I finally managed to motivate myself to get out-of-town and drive to Vermont. It looked like a serious storm was going to hit on Valentine’s Day and I started dreaming about the last Valentine’s Day storm back in 2007. I only had a 24hr window as I had to be back to Edelweiss for 7am on Saturday morning. I hadn’t made my decision on where to ski, so the 5-hour drive made me contemplate my choices. Initially the storm epicentre had a southern track of Southern Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine into the Gaspé Peninsula. Saddleback seemed like an excellent choice at first, however the logistics and time didn’t really make it feasible. I still hadn’t use my Foxcard vouchers, so I focused on Burke, Cannon, Smuggs or Mad River Glen. The shorter drive back made me narrow in on Smuggs and Mad.


Next morning

Arrived at the Skiing Youth couple’s home (aka FISHQ) in Stowe at 11pm Thursday night. White knuckle driving south of St-Jean; snow-covered highway, blowing winds and snow drift on the road. The drive between Burlington and Stowe was easier and found the place to crash by memory. Everyone was sleeping as they had set the alarm for dawn patrol before heading to work. I got up, but return on the couch and fell asleep, woke up late and ran out of the house to drive to Mad.

It was a snowy drive to General Stark mountain with the odd car and truck in the ditch on Highway 17. As I got closer; people were parked along the highway. I had to drive up to the small upper lot above the Practice Slope where I managed to shove my car as the main parking lot was full. I heard that a short time after an 18-wheeler jacked-knife and blocked the highway. One poor snowboarder had driven over the mountain pass to go to Sugarbush, but couldn’t make it further than MadRiverGlen.

Got ready at the car and proceeded to ski down a powder covered Practice Slope. The sight at the top of the final pitch made me stop in my “fresh” tracks: HOLY MASSES!!! I don’t recall ever seeing so many people at Mad River? I skied down to get my lift ticket and opted for a quick lap on the Practice Slope again.

Where did these people come from? I had never seen so many people at Mad.
a) People starved for a storm?
b) Valentine’s Day special with $14 for kissing couples?
c) Snowday at local schools?
d) Ramp skis demo day?
e) 50% off tickets for Ski The Point day people?
f) It was Friday?
g) Friday before a Holiday weekend?
h) Friday before one week school break in Mass?
i) All of the above!!!


Sunnyside double

Both liftlines were long, so I opted to ride the Sunnyside double first. I waited 18 minutes to ride the 1400′ vertical double. I missed skiing off the double which resulted on a descent via Partridge and Slalom Hill. The sign at the top was correct…the new snow-covered a firm base amongst other things.

That is a perfect summary of the conditions of my first run off the double. For the next run, I braved the line for the single. The snow was getting more intense: 34 minutes later I was on the chair. As I missed a secret stash off the double, I decided to head for one off the top. I guess it was the euphoria playing tricks with my judgment as I headed into the woods solo. They were a few traps under a few feet of powder snow and got caught. I lost a ski in the deep powder in the middle of the tight woods and continued almost in a small tree well. Don’t Panic!!! First I needed to breath and relax, push off from the tree and start climbing and digging into the snow to find my ski. I have skied here numbers of times in big storms with Lucky Luke and never had any difficulties. I eventually found the piste and skied on the powdered covered trails down and back to the long single lineup.

It was already 12:15, this was the type of day where you didn’t want to stop. I eat a granola bar in the liftline and called it lunch. I reached the top shortly before 1pm and processed to head for Paradise. You knew from the height of the waterfall that it hadn’t been a stellar season so far. Paradise had some sharp rocks and ice flows buried under the snow which wasn’t necessarily paradise for my skis. When there isn’t a lot of fresh snow, you can avoid the obstacles. Anyway, it wasn’t the best run of the day: the fact that it’s one of the marquee runs of the East, it attracts too many skiers.

Even if the wait was longer, I opted to return to the single. The long wait permitted me to catch my breath and rest my legs. Skiing short groomers versus today’s long descents in a mixed of heavy snow, fluff, bumps and firm base was taxing. During the next half-hour wait, it really started puking: full storm for Fall Line. The conditions were getting better and it was a real creamery and it continued down the Glades. Best run of the day so far. Although I didn’t want to stop to eat, it was already passed 2pm and I hadn’t really eaten much at all today besides yogurt and granola bars. One quick stop inside the Basebox for a cheeseburger and water then back inline.


Now it is Puking

Although the lineups were so long, the mountain was deserted thanks to the low capacity lifts. Unfortunately this ride up the single was going to be the last one of the day. Opted to head down Lynx and Beaver…the conditions kept getting better.

It was 3:40 and I wanted to get on for last ride up the single. As I needed to ride the Practice Slope double to access my car, I opted to take that lift and move my car to the main parking lot and catch the last chair. The problem was that my car was stuck and I eventually decided to remove my right ski boot to maneuver out of there. I eventually managed get it unjammed. I easily found a new parking spot in the main lot, however I had to fight to get my cold right ski boot on. There was still a lineup for the single, but it was alas passed 4pm and the line was closed.

I wasn’t defeated, I headed for the Practice Double for my best 3 runs on that lift EVER!!! Unfortunately the lift closed at 4:15 and skied down over the boardwalk, across the snow-covered Highway 17 all the way to the car. My car as well as other vehicles were stuck and needed some muscle power assistance to get out on the road.

What a day!!! This Valentine’s Day kept getting better all day long. It was going to be a long drive back to Ottawa.

POWDER-POWDER-POWDER!!!
The Valentine’s Day storm that we have all been waiting is still raging. As of the closing bell we have seen a total of 16-19″ of snow from the storm and it is still DUMPING REALLY HARD! This on top of the 7-10″ from earlier in the week gives us well over 2′ since Monday! MRG is now officially “off the hook” and just in time for what is shaping up to be a historic President’s Week holiday. If you have been waiting to ski MRG with optimum conditions your long wait is officially over! Snow is expected to continue overnight so the skiing should just keep getting better and better! Be sure to check out the latest weather forecasts from the Single Chair Weather Blog which really nailed this storm quite some time ago – nice work Josh! This weekend we will spin all 5 lifts with skiing on 100% of our legendary terrain with POWDER skiing surfaces. The groomers will be out in force overnight tacking down all this bounty so there will be some sweet groomers out there too for those of you into that kind of thing! This is what we have been waiting for folks so come on up and… Ski It If You Can!

Days of a few firsts.

First time at this ski area. I’m pretty sure the following was a first. Daytrip where the distance in kilometers (one way or both) was greater than the vertical of the ski area. 250km vs 130m approximately. Leaving the locals which have greater vertical than this Tug I’ve been hearing about for years. The local scene was white, but wasn’t happening.

If it wouldn’t been for the snow that he had all week, but the storm brewing south of the border… then I saw skimore’s post last Friday. This got me thinking:

Tug got 18 last night and

This Afternoon: Snow showers and areas of blowing snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 21. West wind around 16 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 32 to 38 inches possible.

Tonight: Snow and widespread blowing snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 12. Wind chill values as low as zero. West wind between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 15 to 21 inches possible.

Saturday: Snow showers, mainly before 10am. High near 27. Wind chill values as low as -3. West wind between 10 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

I decided to PM skimore, he had invited me down a couple years ago and I was always curious. I could only afford being away for one day, daytrip destination only. As I was giving 40-60 odds of me actually making the trip, I kept staring at the computer screen that showed a strong lake effect instead of working. Too busy, but I had to get out. Then I was pretty much decided, skimore mentioned a friend that what part of his Chic Choc party last April and that he lived somewhere in Eastern Ontario. The friend in question was Taiga from TTips which lives in Ottawa only 2 miles from my home.

Taiga and I agreed at a 5am pickup time. The distance from Ottawa to Tug is something like 220km. The snow level was pretty low at the border which is the St.Lawrence River. Across the border, I had no idea where I was going, lucky Taiga had been to Tug before. After a few minutes, he tells me that he might have missed the turnoff…back we go, heading back from where we came from then we turned. Again, we turned too early and we are heading in the right direction, but the road would then turn west…back on our steps. #-o Looking on a Blackberry and trying to find the proper route…we found a interconnecting road and rejoined Highway 812, where we were suppose to be in the first place. Great, I was lost, no maps will travel.

As we are driving, the snow banks were getting higher. Wow…then in Lowville we made the wrong turn at the Fork in the road. 🙄 We weren’t too far that there was a huge sign mentioned the ski area was 2 miles to the right. 8-[ The plan had been to meet skimore as we wanted to skin up before the lifts opened, however we got there only 20 minutes before the scheduled opening of the lift. We hurried indoor, got changed and heading to wait in line. It would seem all these people know each other. Waiting for the lift to open, I was looking at the main run…not one track. Wow, it was beautiful. :drool: Taiga noticed skimore toward the top of the hill skinning. The lift took a while to get going, so skimore managed a first tracks before the people started arriving on the top. Most of the people assault that wide run next to the liftline. It was fun, however the pitch was a bit flat for this amount of new snow. We repeated this one more time and then saw skimore at the top. He said that this was too flat and that we needed to follow him. I don’t know where he brought us? Faceshots, pillows, not sure if this was an official trail or if we turned away from the ski area. At one point, there was this drop, the slope wasn’t getting steeper, it was a sharp drop. I was somewhat concern with all the trees and branches around, but it didn’t seem to be much of a problem as skimore and friends charged down. This terrain is steep and intense (although short), not many place this small have terrain like this in their off-piste. We headed back further and further skiing through some nasty prickly branches, like skiing through bard wire, you don’t want a face shot here. 😕 At the bottom of the drop, we were to negotiate a creek crossing. Back on top, back in the woods. I thought we were back at the same place, but skimore mentioned that this place wasn’t. I didn’t know where we were. Lost again, no maps, will travel.

A well deserved lunch at the bar, we headed back up with some skins as we were going to head toward a closed part of the hill. Trackless in the woods and on the trails, but not as steep. We decided to headback to where we were in the morning. We were a fairly big group, but we started to split up. Taiga and I got loss with skimore one more time. For the next run, I was toasted and wanted to ski the official trails. This is a fun local area, not much of a challenge…until you get lost.

Thanks to skimore for being a wonderful guide and lending a set of skis and skins. Not a ton of vertical and a lot of pushing, but I was done.

You can’t let days like this go by, especially in October.

When will there be another occasion like this? ❓ ❓ ❓

Being October, I will put a baseball analogy to this trip.

How long will it take for Red Sox or White Sox to win the World Series again?

PREPARATIONS (WEDNESDAY EVENING):

S**t, need to get myself in gear.

a) Ski stuff, somewhere around here. Readjust the DINs on my bindings.

b) Show tires, not much time…I promised a ride for someone at work tomorrow.

c) Ski driving partner. Already called, he can’t make it on Friday. It’s a PD day for schools in the Townships. Left a message with the other partner in Montreal. Don’t necessarily need a partner, but it’s helps split the cost.

d) At least, I secured a place to sleep tomorrow night (if they open Friday) at my friend in Bromont. That should cut 45-60 minutes to the drive from Montreal. So it’s a 3 hours drive tomorrow evening to get to his place.

e) Snow tires … don’t necessarily need them, but it would be nice just in case. My friend in Bromont said that it was still snowing and there was a new 6 inches on the ground.

f) One small detail. I have to ask for my Friday off (in case). Open on Friday would definitely be much better and probably less skied out.

g) Schedule to work on Sunday. Wife will not be happy if I’m not at home for two days then I go to work all day Sunday. Need to change that also.

h) Later at 10pm at night… Wife says that she would LIKE to have the car on Saturday 🙄 . My daughter has music lesson + birthday party. Ah yes, I need to be back in Ottawa before Sunday morning.

WHAT WAS I GOING TO DO? WHAT THIS DOING TO STOP ME?

Asked my mother in Montreal if I could borrow her car and asked her to get the snow tires on.

Took the Voyageur/Greyhound to Montreal that Thursday evening. No skiing partner, regardless I was determined. Some people might call it committed. 😯

Montreal-Wildcat: 340km (230 miles) and 3:30 hours drive.

Day 1 / Friday October 28, 2005: Driving to the Whites.

It was interesting to see the snow variations on the ground during the drive. First sight of snow started in the fields around Farnham (40km east of Mtl). I could see the Bromont, Sutton, Glen, Orford and Jay Peak ski runs all white. This really looked like winter, except for the red leaves on the trees.

Snow didn’t last… to my surprise there wasn’t any snow on the ground from a few miles past the US border until the White Mountains.

Day 1 / Friday October 28, 2005: the Whites.

Arrived at the Wildcat parking lot at 9:30am – first chair at 10:00. I was there at around 10:15am.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 28:

Tomcat triple was the only lift open. 1500′ vertical of pure natural snow skiing, much better that the usually early season eastern skiing. The mountain was charging $30 for lift tick.

Trails open at opening were: Middle/Lower Polecat, Tomcat, Catnap, Middle/lower Lynx. However poaching was definitely happening. Maybe one-two hours later, Tomcat Schuss official opened. I did one of my early runs here. Lost a ski for no apparent reason, but continued skiing for maybe 30-40 ft. Tried to retrieve my ski by walking up. I sank down by 3 feet, boy was this hard. I always had mid to full pole in snowdepth.

Around lunch, the patrol was about to official open the skiing on the right side of the mountain (Cat Track, Middle/lower Wildcat, Middle Catapult, Bobcat, Cheetah). I decided to ski down a steep line; Black Cat. Let’s say that there was a lot of snow, because this run looks like it was full obstacles (i guess this one was not open). Made it down (I was puffing)… continued down Alley Cat (lower mountain intermediate). AHHH – huge waterbars every 30feet… What a rough ride. The worst part of it, I screwed up skiing Catapult and ended again on that same Alley Cat trail.

What a beautiful view of Mount Washington, regardless that the cloud level was at around 5000ft (top of Tuckerman).

Some people were climbing the extra 500ft vertical to reach the summit. I had such a fun time that I decided to sleep in Gorham and ski the next day. You could get the following day ticket for $25!!! Good deal indeed!!! A full day skiing: 10:15 – 3:30 virtually without a break or lunch. The mountain definitely became quiet after 1:30pm. I did 15 runs, I was going to feel it the next day.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 29:

Wildcat was charging $39, but it’s was still a bargain if you ask me. Of course, I had paid $25 for it the previous day.

More people and the worst line-up were about 5 minutes at around noon.

I got to the chairlift at 9:15am, the plan was no lunch and end early, because I needed to end back to take the Greyhound back to Ottawa from Montreal.

Extra runs official opened (?): Feline, Cougar, Alley Cat (no more waterbars), Lower Catapult, Wildcat Pitch, Wild Kitten, Catenary (incl Lower). Basically, virtually everything was skiable. Ally’s Folly was great, some people skied Hairball and Mountain Jag Glade regardless of the creeks.

The high traffic areas started to ice up (ie. Middle Wildcat). When the skier density increased, I decide to climb to the top via Upper Catamount. It probably took me between 30-45 minutes, I was happy that part of that climb was groomed, the first 15 minutes were really hard. Today was definitely the most spectacular day. A blue sky day, Mount Washington white and bright. WOW!!!

Did my top to bottom run on the classic Wildcat trail, what a fun trail. Lose powder, wind-blown at some spots, but definitely worth the climb. Finished my day at 3pm with approximately 10 runs.

What about the snow compared to the previous day? I estimate that under the Triple the snow compacted by about one foot at mid-mountain between early Friday and late Saturday. How much snow will there be in the next few days?

1) First of all, I want to thank the management of Wildcat for making this possible. =D>

Maybe they did it for the publicity, but it’s sure beat all the signals we’ve been hearing in the East lately.
