Lionel, Powderfreak, JoshFox and all the others were talking about the upcoming stormy weather. The finally long awaited storm for the snow starved Northeast mountains.
Is it true or will everyone be disappointed again?
Looking at a map and trying to figure out where it will hit and where I can go?
I can’t choke now on a trip to Vermont.

Got to Mad River Glen and everyone was there.
Looking to ride in a secret location.
Not the smartest thing to do when you’re solo and run into trouble.
Trying to get my head quiet from my problems.
Still a challenge to get out of the bed right now!!!

So I finally managed to motivate myself to get out-of-town and drive to Vermont. It looked like a serious storm was going to hit on Valentine’s Day and I started dreaming about the last Valentine’s Day storm back in 2007. I only had a 24hr window as I had to be back to Edelweiss for 7am on Saturday morning. I hadn’t made my decision on where to ski, so the 5-hour drive made me contemplate my choices. Initially the storm epicentre had a southern track of Southern Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine into the Gaspé Peninsula. Saddleback seemed like an excellent choice at first, however the logistics and time didn’t really make it feasible. I still hadn’t use my Foxcard vouchers, so I focused on Burke, Cannon, Smuggs or Mad River Glen. The shorter drive back made me narrow in on Smuggs and Mad.


Next morning

Arrived at the Skiing Youth couple’s home (aka FISHQ) in Stowe at 11pm Thursday night. White knuckle driving south of St-Jean; snow-covered highway, blowing winds and snow drift on the road. The drive between Burlington and Stowe was easier and found the place to crash by memory. Everyone was sleeping as they had set the alarm for dawn patrol before heading to work. I got up, but return on the couch and fell asleep, woke up late and ran out of the house to drive to Mad.

It was a snowy drive to General Stark mountain with the odd car and truck in the ditch on Highway 17. As I got closer; people were parked along the highway. I had to drive up to the small upper lot above the Practice Slope where I managed to shove my car as the main parking lot was full. I heard that a short time after an 18-wheeler jacked-knife and blocked the highway. One poor snowboarder had driven over the mountain pass to go to Sugarbush, but couldn’t make it further than MadRiverGlen.

Got ready at the car and proceeded to ski down a powder covered Practice Slope. The sight at the top of the final pitch made me stop in my “fresh” tracks: HOLY MASSES!!! I don’t recall ever seeing so many people at Mad River? I skied down to get my lift ticket and opted for a quick lap on the Practice Slope again.

Where did these people come from? I had never seen so many people at Mad.
a) People starved for a storm?
b) Valentine’s Day special with $14 for kissing couples?
c) Snowday at local schools?
d) Ramp skis demo day?
e) 50% off tickets for Ski The Point day people?
f) It was Friday?
g) Friday before a Holiday weekend?
h) Friday before one week school break in Mass?
i) All of the above!!!


Sunnyside double

Both liftlines were long, so I opted to ride the Sunnyside double first. I waited 18 minutes to ride the 1400′ vertical double. I missed skiing off the double which resulted on a descent via Partridge and Slalom Hill. The sign at the top was correct…the new snow-covered a firm base amongst other things.

That is a perfect summary of the conditions of my first run off the double. For the next run, I braved the line for the single. The snow was getting more intense: 34 minutes later I was on the chair. As I missed a secret stash off the double, I decided to head for one off the top. I guess it was the euphoria playing tricks with my judgment as I headed into the woods solo. They were a few traps under a few feet of powder snow and got caught. I lost a ski in the deep powder in the middle of the tight woods and continued almost in a small tree well. Don’t Panic!!! First I needed to breath and relax, push off from the tree and start climbing and digging into the snow to find my ski. I have skied here numbers of times in big storms with Lucky Luke and never had any difficulties. I eventually found the piste and skied on the powdered covered trails down and back to the long single lineup.

It was already 12:15, this was the type of day where you didn’t want to stop. I eat a granola bar in the liftline and called it lunch. I reached the top shortly before 1pm and processed to head for Paradise. You knew from the height of the waterfall that it hadn’t been a stellar season so far. Paradise had some sharp rocks and ice flows buried under the snow which wasn’t necessarily paradise for my skis. When there isn’t a lot of fresh snow, you can avoid the obstacles. Anyway, it wasn’t the best run of the day: the fact that it’s one of the marquee runs of the East, it attracts too many skiers.

Even if the wait was longer, I opted to return to the single. The long wait permitted me to catch my breath and rest my legs. Skiing short groomers versus today’s long descents in a mixed of heavy snow, fluff, bumps and firm base was taxing. During the next half-hour wait, it really started puking: full storm for Fall Line. The conditions were getting better and it was a real creamery and it continued down the Glades. Best run of the day so far. Although I didn’t want to stop to eat, it was already passed 2pm and I hadn’t really eaten much at all today besides yogurt and granola bars. One quick stop inside the Basebox for a cheeseburger and water then back inline.


Now it is Puking

Although the lineups were so long, the mountain was deserted thanks to the low capacity lifts. Unfortunately this ride up the single was going to be the last one of the day. Opted to head down Lynx and Beaver…the conditions kept getting better.

It was 3:40 and I wanted to get on for last ride up the single. As I needed to ride the Practice Slope double to access my car, I opted to take that lift and move my car to the main parking lot and catch the last chair. The problem was that my car was stuck and I eventually decided to remove my right ski boot to maneuver out of there. I eventually managed get it unjammed. I easily found a new parking spot in the main lot, however I had to fight to get my cold right ski boot on. There was still a lineup for the single, but it was alas passed 4pm and the line was closed.

I wasn’t defeated, I headed for the Practice Double for my best 3 runs on that lift EVER!!! Unfortunately the lift closed at 4:15 and skied down over the boardwalk, across the snow-covered Highway 17 all the way to the car. My car as well as other vehicles were stuck and needed some muscle power assistance to get out on the road.

What a day!!! This Valentine’s Day kept getting better all day long. It was going to be a long drive back to Ottawa.

The Valentine’s Day storm that we have all been waiting is still raging. As of the closing bell we have seen a total of 16-19″ of snow from the storm and it is still DUMPING REALLY HARD! This on top of the 7-10″ from earlier in the week gives us well over 2′ since Monday! MRG is now officially “off the hook” and just in time for what is shaping up to be a historic President’s Week holiday. If you have been waiting to ski MRG with optimum conditions your long wait is officially over! Snow is expected to continue overnight so the skiing should just keep getting better and better! Be sure to check out the latest weather forecasts from the Single Chair Weather Blog which really nailed this storm quite some time ago – nice work Josh! This weekend we will spin all 5 lifts with skiing on 100% of our legendary terrain with POWDER skiing surfaces. The groomers will be out in force overnight tacking down all this bounty so there will be some sweet groomers out there too for those of you into that kind of thing! This is what we have been waiting for folks so come on up and… Ski It If You Can!

It was raining all weekend in the Great Wet North, so I decide to head South and get some of those Spring activities down in places where the weather was dryer.

A beautiful day in the Valley, but our heads were in the clouds. More later…films pics are probably going to ready in 2010, however I wasn’t the only one with a camera that day.

Great fun to be repeated some day with greater sleep and rest to fully appreciate the possibilities.

May 26: Road opened. Great skiing, unfortunately I wasn’t available last weekend for the road opening. Great TR from that weekend. I’ve been waiting to go skee via Otto for maybe 3-4 years; ever since seeing TRs from Lftgly and GPetrics with Salida on the snowfields and GG.

May 29: Weather was becoming very sketchy. Rain, rain and rain in the forecast. I had an unofficial discussion about a possible Mt. Wash trip under the rain at Jay with Gpetrics. He’s also looking at the forecast. Awf was also looking to tag up and to head up the road on T4T. I also spoke to my none-internet ski friends.

May 31: Weather was calling for 50% chance of rain and t-storm. I could live with the rain, but I was more concerned with the t-storm. I was debating into maybe pushing the trip one week later, but also remembering that everything up there was gone quick last year. Looking at best opportunity, another forecast are slightly less negative. I decide to bail at 2pm ish…until updated forecast dropped the chance of showers to 40%. The forecast was getting better as we were getting closer. Finally decided to go for it after all. Icelandic gave his advice on T4T. G looks at it…called me back and we set meeting time. Message left for AWF.

May 31 – 19:02: We left Ottawa with the entire family. Wife had to be in Montreal the next day; she was going to leave alone if I decided to bail.

May 31 – 22:01: Girls were finally in bed. I got my stuff ready and watched the hockey game.

May 31 – 23:01: In bed and set the alarm for 4am. 😯 😯

June 1 – 4:45: Departed from mom’s house in Montreal in the rain.

5:02: Left the island of Montreal in the pouring rain. Drove above the limit to make up time and be able arrive at rendez-vous point at 8:30am.

6:17: Heavy cloud cover, but no rain as I’m questioned by US border guard.

7:15: St.Johnsbury: time to put some gas.

8:19: Made it at Otto Rhode’s lot.

8:30: Awf and Danimal (from T4T) showed up. Inform him that Gpetrics and K_C would be there. Cool…We’ll try to fit into G’s car.

8:44: Gpetrics and K_C joined us and we decided to pack everything in their truck.

9:01: $48US divided by 5 is what this is costing us. Gpetrics tell us to listen to the first minutes of the Auto Audio guide. DESTINY INDEED!!!

9:28: We are driving into the clouds.

9:34: K_C’s head was almost cut off by a few pairs of skis thanks to Gpetrics sharp turn into the Lot of the Clouds.

9:41: Got our boots on and added some more layers. It’s didn’t feel like June. Isn’t this GREAT!!! 😛

9:45: Hiked over rocks in ski boots to reach the snowfields. GPetrics and Awf mentioned how much snow was lost in one week.

9:59: First turns in June. We lost Gpetrics in the heavy fog as he blasted into warp speed. I guess we follow the “white”?

10:00: 160m vertical. Snowfields were steeper than I thought.


After Snowfield descent, we needed to get back up.

10:10: Hiked back up.

10:15: Pat was going to be sick. Reasons: a) out-of-shape; b) lack of sleep; c) hungry; d) altitude; e) white out conditions/vertigo; f) all of the above. Needed to sit down, breath, drink and eat.

10:20: Felt a bit better.

10:30: Finally I was back at the top.

10:40: Repeated 2 more times. Pat was okay. Awf was taking pictures, Pat skis blind and saw him at the last second. The hike back up was getting easier and took Pat 15 minutes this time.


Good, we were able to find the car.

12:00: Back at the car, Pat got his helmet. We were heading off to the Great Gulf. Where the hell was it? Where were we? Ah, here’s the road!!! G and A talked about the stuff they did in GG the previous weekend.

Snow: The Gathering

12:45: Top of Turket Chute. Evaluation of the ski route. GPetrics and Awf were ready to go for it. Awf talked about a 5-6 feet choke. K_C and Pat hesitated. Danimal wasn’t sure. Pat volunteered to show Airplane to Danimal.

13:02: GPetrics, Awf and K_C skied it and dove through the choke. Pat walked off into to fog trying to find Airplane with Danimal.

13:15: Airplane found. Danimal found it steep; Pat told this bad timing story about someone dying on Chute. Sorry. 😦 I measured the top part of the slope at 43 degrees.

13:25: Pat was the guinea pig. Snow was fine, however it was slick in some places. Made some short turns to control speed on the hard surface upper steeps. Danimal made some nice teleturns, skipping over some obstacles toward the bottom.

13:35: Pat and Danimal stopped not far from the Lake. We decided to stop before bushwaking. That was a great 298m vertical descent.

13:55: After a 20 minutes wait for the others (they were going to try to connect with Airplane from Turkey. I guess, it didn’t connect?) Were we alone? We had a great foggy view with no sign of the others, so we started hiking back up the 1000ft couloir.

14:05: I saw the others skiing down. We found out that they had hike out of Turkey. They stopped about 100 meters above us.

14:15: Hiked on a different boot ladder until the mid-steep part. The traversing of a 40 degree slope was a bit nerve raking. Wished I had an ice axe like the rest of our party. I ended up climbing on all four.

15:05: Back at the top of Airplane, Gpetrics and Awf were talking about a short run down Space Walk. I decided against it. I was tempted, but I was still thinking about the long way back to Ottawa afterward.

15:40: K_C, Danimal and Pat waited for them for a while then we started heading back toward the car. Weather and wind were much colder and stronger now.

16:05: Two guys hiked over towards us looking for Airplane??? WTF??? Isn’t it a bit late? A short time later, G and Awf caught up to us. Geez, the two guys asked them about Turkey Chute.

16:35: After 55 minutes of hiking over boulders in ski boots with wind trying to throw you down, we were back at the car. 7 hours on the mountain. Pat and Danimal skied about 800 meters today in 4 runs. K_C (5 runs), G and A accumulated more than 1000m (6 runs).

16:40: Packed the car again. It’s was realllllly windy. Awf and Pat decided against removing ski boots now.

16:55: We started driving down. We noticed that the rest of the valley had clear skies, only the top of the Presidentials were in the clouds.

17:15: Arrived at the bottom, we parted ways: Hanover, Boston and Ottawa. Pat told himself that a day skiing trip are a bit much when hiking is involved. Plus I needed to get back here in getting shape.

18:30: Pat tried to eat a hot pizza bought near Jeffersonville while driving.

21:00: Crossed border, the pouring rain started shortly after…all the way to Montreal.

June 2, 1:00: Final arrived in Ottawa with the family and kids after picking them up in Montreal. Lucky my wife was there for the last 2 hours of driving.

June 2, 2:00: Stuff more-or-less unpacked. Finally I got to bed.

June 2, 9:00: Backed at work

June 3: Film at Camera shop

June 8, 23:17: Full TR completed.

June 10, 20:58: Pat gets back to continuing his Chilean TRs from last Summer.

June 11: Pics ready for Bday.

It wasn’t SUNday…it was RAINday. 8) 8) 8)

I was in Montreal on Saturday, so better to take advantage of it. Unfortunately the forecast was less than ideal. Rain everywhere…I hadn’t made my call on where to ski. The best lift served skiing option was the Loaf. The worst was MSS with 2 runs at $39. In the middle were the Bush and Jay. Three of them weren’t sure of opening on Sunday due to rain in the forecast. Sugarloaf was out of the question as it was too far with this weather and going solo. I had to wait until I got a confirmation on the phone that Jay was going to open. Got it at around 8:30am…Called MSS, no news – MIA. Left Montreal in a light drizzle.

After a long detour on Autoroute 10 (WTF was that???), I got into a virtually empty Stateside parking lot. I got changed and eat a sandwich as I got ready. As I headed out for the short walk to the Jet chair, I came face-to-face with a couple of FTO fanatical and future FIS skiers. One of them was going to change his skis. I wasn’t surprised to meet up with these hardcore skiers.

Okay, what is official open?

Here is the “Runs” down. 😉

1) Haynes/Mont L’Entrepide – First run, hood was doing down too low; couldn’t see much. Skiing in an aquarium feeling. Snow was pretty corny. 😛 The last time I skied this run was back in pre-lift October 06.

2) The Jet – Second run. Same type of Spring snow. Good coverage, however I never really like this trail. It’s a straight liftline trail.

Trail that wasn’t mentioned as being officially open, but it’s was open. Sign on top mentioned walking required.

3) Montrealer/Angel’s Wiggle/Paradise Meadows – 3rd run. Great coverage, harder surface, but still soft. Not many bare spots. Only walking was for the connection to the Jet triple.

Other trails:

4) Kitzbuehel – Branch on Skier’s Right. Harder surface bumps. Maybe 1-2 spot to walk or/and tight connection. Notice that the other branch on Kitzbuehel has better coverage. Connection walking back to Jet trail via Heaven’s Road. Greg and Salida saw me from the lift and mentioned that they’ll wait for me at the top.

5) Kitzbuehel – Branch on Skier’s Left. Did the way better side with FTOers and friends. Salida had changed his skis for some good old pair of Rossi 4S. Great…

6-7) Kitz Woods/Hell’s Crossing/Angel’s Wiggle – Great coverage, rotten and dirty snow, but fun obstacle course, especially the exit through the bushes onto Hell’s Crossing.

8 ) Derick Hot Shot/Mont L’Entrepide – Fun and bumps again. A few tight spots, but nothing major.

9-10) Kitz Woods/Hell’s Crossing/Angel’s Wiggle – again because it’s so much fun.

11) Montrealer/Catwalk(walking)/Northway(climbing on snow)/Upper and Lower Can-Am – A treat for the last run of the day. Can-Am. 😀 Coverage was almost continuous on Upper Can-Am. Nice hard Spring surface, not mush. Highlight of the day for all of us. Shared a beer at mid-run (thanks guys).

Lower Can-Am was more a connection on snow patches. I’m amazed how little rocks there is on the grass. Made it almost down to the bottom of the Bonnie chair without removing my skis. Okay, it included some no snow sliding.

Started skiing at noon and it’s stopped raining at my 8th run.

Great day, great fun and great companionship (almost sounds like a beer commercial). It was also closing day at Jay, so what is left?
