Over 3 months after the post from the previous day. I’ve talked about the warm Friday thaw and the refreeze. Conditions were going to be icy for this race. Skis were ready.
My daughter had a slalom race; A competition on Exhibition or was it an exhibition on Competition. Never sure which side of the run is called what?
A beautiful sunny morning, it was quite impressive seeing Exhibition and Competition on the World Cup side of Mont Cascades on pink dawn morning light. I normally get to Mont Cascades for the odd nights or a few times during the days with the family a few seasons ago, but never this early. The hill really looked impressive and steep in this light, unfortunately I had forget the camera. We parked in the tiny parking lot on this side and the seldom used lodge was filling with kids in speed suits and pads. Today’s race was a slalom with not one cloud in the sky and beautiful -7c.
The slalom course started off under the triple at the top then used skier’s right under the lift and stay on that side of the hill. Not sure if that side of the hill is called Competition or Exhibition. Regardless, it’s a fun hill and Morgane should do fairly well as it starts off steep only to flatten at the end. I noticed that I had forgot my wallet, so I had to borrow cash from one of the parent to buy my pass.
Conditions were fast. Course had a few sharp turn on top. At the K2 level, only two others girls have never raced competitively before. Those girls raced with Cascades and this season I’ve told Morgane to compare herself with them, not the girls that have been racing for a few seasons and maybe even trained in Chile. Although she is smaller in size, she’s been finishing most of her races. She just needs to find the consistency. The other girls have been generally finishing ahead of her, however were behind the general standings as they weren’t as successful in finishing their runs. One of the girls was disqualified on the first run and Morgane was only 7/100 seconds behind on the other girl. In the second run, she was almost one second faster. Things were sharping up nicely for the Finals in three weeks from now. A bit of training and less no races will do some good. (Unfortunately, sometimes you can’t take things for granted.)
I did a bunch of free runs included some of the other side. Conditions were as icy and the terrain not really interesting, so I came back to ski on Exhibition/Competition. Morgane did skied with one of the girls from Cascades which DSQ.It’s funny, but the girls were Irish Dancing together for a number of years when they were younger. Now Sarah is taller than my wife. Hill were definitely icy today and course didn’t deteriorate. Today was a good day race. I noticed at the end of that my Sunnto watch died and the data was all funky, but not downloadable. It would have made a funny graph. The watch said -1 run, I think that should have been 17.
I didn’t have my camera, but one parent did. Thanks for the pictures.

Your daughter has the pink helmet right? Does she go with you on big ski trips yet? Just wondering, what is the biggest mountain she ever skied?I love your website! I am waiting for more posts!
Yes Steepmomo (nice try), I’ll eventually post pictures from last year’s trip at Mammoth. 😀
Wow, this girl is so fashionable with her pink helmet! Mad Pat, your posts are so inspiring 🙂
