Temperatures in the high 20s prior to the last weekend has really affected the remaining two trails from the only two remaining ski areas in the East. St-Sauveur loaded it’s last chair of the season at 5pm on Victoria Day Monday. Unless they pull out a surprise like last season or 2019, that puts an end of the longest season in Québec; closing 4 weeks later than the closest Eastern Canada area Monts Ste-Anne and Édouard on April 21. Year-after-year, St-Sauveur is the last to spin in Eastern Canada and one of the two last areas in the East to close, often skiing or/and closing on this past Canadian Long weekend (8 times since 2013 – 82%)*. The other ski area is, of course, Killington the traditional last hill to close in the East (4 times – 37%).
Victoria Day weekend is the goal for St-Sauveur’s season; the following Memorial Day weekend is the goal for Kiilington (9 times since 2013 – 82%) with June as a bonus. Since I started keeping track in 2006, St-Sauveur has closed last in the East 9 times versus 7 times for Killington, however since 2013 Kmart has comeback to their old motto “longest season in the East” and have closed their lifts last 8 times versus 3 for the old Laurentians resort.
Killington will make to Memorial Day weekend, the question is when will they stop the lifts for skiers? The “June” is no longer being mentioned as a goal; it would seem a long shot right now. The above average temperatures are still on the menu until the weekend then it dips somewhat after Memorial Day. Will it be enough for Killington to often a few hours of lift served snow patched with required hiking? That is still to be seen. June seems really far right now.
Stay tuned, but you might need your rock skis.
