The lost ski area located in Willington, Vermont was in the news last week. A group of investors would like to start a Private Ski Club at the former ski area known as Haystack. The ski area has been closed since 2005.
The Southern Vermont ski area opened in 1964. Thirty years later the owner of neighbouring Mount Snow, S-K-I Ltd, bought Haystack and they were at one point plans to connect both areas together. That company had similar plans for Pico and Killington that never materialized. S-K-I Ltd would be incorporated into American Ski Company (ASC) in 1996. Haystack became associated to the bigger Mt. Snow, however as ASC got into financial difficulties, it started cutting back on Haystack’s operations where it started running only on weekends and Holidays in 2005. Eventually Haystack would be part of the sell-offs in 2005. The ski area has been closed ever since. There was one previous try into turning Haystack as a Private Ski Club, it sounds like there might be another.
