*Update: May 30, 9:40am: “BREAKING NEWS: The Beast will be open on June 1st for the final day of the 2023/24 winter season. The Superstar Express Quad will spin from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (conditions permitting) on Saturday only. Tickets will be $25”
Will there be skiing in June? The answer, is generally, Yes. Not at Snowbird. Not at Palisades or Mammoth either. But they are a few holdouts; Timberline Lodge as usual. Not much of a surprise for Arapahoe Basin (aiming for June 9). Or surprising like Arizona Snowbowl opening one last time on Saturday June 1st. One that is still evaluating on their season is Killington, Vermont. Which has decided Yes.*
After the Memorial Day weekend, given the state of the snow coverage left on Superstar, some people are sceptical that Kiilington would be able to offer skiing again for June, 5 days after last opening on Memorial day Monday. Last weekend people had to load/unload the lift skis/board off and walk to and off the snow. That was a few days ago. Most ski areas would even bother to consider opening with the state of coverage currently offered, and yet, they haven’t thrown in the towel on calling it a season.
Last update from Killington’s website after the weekend and Facebook page on Wednesday:
“As for skiing we are asking you all to stay tuned as we assess conditions and see if it’s going to be possible to get some June turns in this year. “
“Will we be skiing and riding on June 1st?“
If they open, it might be a shorten day. Some walking will definitely be required. Killington has done it before: June 4, 2022 was definitely one of those days.
Killington’s average closing date (earliest and latest dates)*
2013 to 2024: May 30 (May 18, June 4)* – 193 (175-211)
2004 to 2012: May 2 (April 20, May 15) – 171 (153-188)
1998 to 2003: May 27 (May 25, June 1) – 204 (202-205)
1982 to 1997: June 7 (May 21, June 22) – 225 (208-246)

The current skiing situation:
Killington VT – June 1 (tentative) *
Trail: Superstar and some walking
Lift : Superstar Express Quad
Latest from the Kmart website Thursday morning*:
Don’t let the web cams fool you! Our grooming team has done some late season calculations and assures us there is enough snow remaining that with a little farming, they’ll be able to piece together one final day of skiing and riding for the 2023/24 season on June 1st.
The plan is to connect the Superstar trail below the headwall for nearly 1000’ of vertical. Some walking, including on and off the chairlift will be required, and the skiing and riding is recommended for experts only.
The Superstar Express Quad is scheduled to spin from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on Saturday June 1st, but hours may change based on conditions. Tickets will be $25 (all ages), with proceeds benefitting Killington Mountain Bike Club, in honor of National Trails Day. Commemorative T-shirts will be given out while supplies last, so get here early for the best coverage and to nab your souvenir.
GO SKIING!!!!

Remember, the ski season is never over, it just moves elsewhere.
Besides the areas mentioned above (Arizona Snowbowl AZ, Arapahoe Basin CO, Timberline Lodge OR) and indoor skiing at Big Snow in New Jersey. There are a few options in the Northern Hemisphere beyond North America: a few summer glaciers currently in the Alps and Norway plus Gassan ski area in Japan.
And Winter is about to start in the Southern Hemisphere with a hand full of ski resorts already open in the Andes and with few others elsewhere opening soon.
