*Update, May 12, 9pm: Jay Peak announced that Saturday will be their last day. Avoiding Sunday’s potential thunderstorm and coming one day short from reaching their latest closing date since I started tracking closing dates in 2006. St-Sauveur announced earlier today that they will also be open Victoria Day weekend (May 21-23) and will continue as long as there is snow to ski on.
**Update, May 19, 8pm: I had seen Mont Miller not opening on Sunday, but didn’t managed to update the blog.
We are in uncharted territory for the millennium, we have 4 ski areas that have actually already confirmed that they will be only this weekend, the third weekend in May. On May 8, Ontario’s Loch Lomond had their and possibly the province’s latest closing date ever.
Skiing this late in Spring at Killington and St-Sauveur is pretty common, the fact that they are two extra areas open this late makes it exceptional, in fact these two are mentioned that they will remain open as long as there is snow. Although Jay has made it to May 15 once back in 2011, if they open Sunday they will tied it. As for the Gaspé’s Mont Miller, they have made to May 3 once back in 2015, but to my knowledge, this would be their latest opening. The fact that Mont Miller, like some of more others Eastern Quebec areas like Le Valinouet, this is uniquely done with natural snow as they have any snowmaking.
Even if we are talking equally or breaking their latest closing dates, we are still very far for that goal for Killlington and Mont St-Sauveur, but areas have made to June more than once, the last season was 2019. Even if they are now publicly saying they still have a lot of snow and will remain open as long as there is snow, we are still very far from June 8 (St-Sauveur in 2019) and June 22 (Killington in 1997). The snowstake at the top of Mount Mansfield is roughly at average depth for this period, even if snowdepth this season has been under average most of the Winter. However the heat has arrived in the East and we are expecting temperatures way above the averages and possibly close to daily heat records and that risks accelerated the snowpack melting.
PS. Currently away traveling, so updating via phone is challenging. If you’re interested seeing my travel pictures and updates, you can find them via madpatski on Instagram or Ski Mad Workd page on Facebook. Go skiing. Peace.
