Mont St-Sauveur’s lift shutdown prior to the torrential rain on Saturday with a little walking required. No question that St-Sauveur pushed their season “as long as there is snow”. Normally they wouldn’t even consider opening if walking was required; the only exception that I recall was June 8, 2019 when the resort opened their waterpark on the same day. St-Sauveur has made it June twice back in 1997 and 2019, but June skiing north of the border is more of a novelty. On the other hand Killington used to have an annual race called the June Fun Slalom in the 1980s (1982-88) and 1990s (1992-97), so June skiing is less than an anomaly even though made it only 3 times since the start of the millennium. To be fair, during an 7-8 year period (2004-2012), the motto of the “longest ski season in the East” was no longer part of the operational goal.
Killington’s average closing date (earliest and latest dates)*
2013 to 2022: May 26 (May 18, June 2)*
2004 to 2012: May 2 (April 20, May 15)
1998 to 2003: May 27 (May 25, June 1)
1982 to 1997: June 7 (May 21, June 22)
* (Covid shutdown excluded)
Since the Beast is back motto about 9 seasons ago, Killington decided to recapture the spirit of the “longest season in the East” slogan, the skiing until the month of June hasn’t been a distant dream, but a possibility. Killington’s lifts have often been the one spinning in Eastern US for a few weekends. This season is no different.
There is still a bit of uncertainty if Killington will open beyond Monday and if so, when will they reopen? Wednesday June 1? Or wait for the following Friday June 3 and the weekend? Yes, June skiing is almost here.
The skiing situation:
Killington VT – at least until May 30 (Friday-Monday Memorial day) – skiing into June TBD
Trail: Superstar
Lift : Superstar Express Quad
Time : 9am to 5pm (8am to 5pm Sat & Sun)
“We’ve still got top-to-bottom skiing on Superstar and the grooming team will be out tonight getting is ready for tomorrow morning. If you are bump fan, don’t worry it will bump up quite fast. The Superstar Express Quad will spin Friday through Sunday as well as Memorial Day (Monday, May 30) until 5:00 p.m., weather and conditions permitting, until the snow is gone.
Please be aware that late season conditions are suitable for advanced skiers and riders only. “
Remember, the ski season is never over, it just moves elsewhere.
GO SKIING!!!!
