Down to two “outdoor” lift served ski options for this weekend, the same last season players: St-Sauveur and Killington. The end is near, hopefully there are a couple weekends of skiing left.

Another May Madness at St-Sauveur, celebrating the spring skiing on the Canadian Holiday weekend, a new tradition with live music, night skiing in the Laurentians resort. St-Sauveur’s last chair is scheduled for this Monday, however last May, MSS added a bonus day one week later. Next weekend it’s time for the US to have a long weekend and Killington has it’s own events Memorial Day; then there is June which is always a traditional skiing goal for the Verrmont resort.

Of course, Tuckerman Ravine has always been a major destination for many Canadian ski diehards crossing the border on this long weekend.

Since 2011* St-Sauveur has closed on Victoria Day weekend 7 times, closing on the Holiday Monday 4 times. St-Sauveur made to this long weekend 9 times (69%) versus 10 (77%) for Killington. Basically liftserved skiing has happened this weekend every season except two (85%).

Last Sunday under the rain, Sugarloaf and Sugarbush shutdown their lifts one last time this season. Two down, three continues. For the first time this Spring, no one ski area will be open midweek. Jay has already confirmed that this will be their last weekend of the season which will leave us again to St-Sauveur and Killington as last pair spinning.

As stated in the last post, people are always surprised about skiing still happening in May. Not only May, but pretty much assured someone will be still open on Mothers’ Day weekend. With the exception of the 2020 Covid shutdown, this weekend will marked the 11th consecutive Mothers’ Day with skiing; almost always with at least 2 ski resorts open.

*Update, May 2, 9:30am : Sugarbush just added Friday to their weekend as it was initially announced then removed. Beautiful day tomorrow.

People are always amazed that I’m still skiing in April, let alone May. There is always one Eastern ski area open in the East, unless there is a continent wide pandemic shutdown. In my case, I’ve skied in May in the East for every year except one since 1984, that’s 40 times out of 41 years.

Currently only 2 ski areas are spinning their lifts daily (Kmart and Loaf), that will be 5 this weekend. Last Sunday saw Sunday River close out their season with a bit of rain with their traditional free skiing on their last day. This Sunday will marked the end of the season for both Sugarbush and Sugarloaf. Jay Peak is hoping for another weekend after. Only St-Sauveur and Killington will be pushing for at least late May. Spring skiing was prime at Sugarloaf on Monday; go skiing, encourage the diehards areas that are spinning for you.

Last weekend in April is on the horizon and half of the last week’s remaining ski resorts have stopped the lifts for the 2023-24 ski season; most of the 6 ski resorts still going strong and should often skiing into the month of May. The only resort is scheduled to closed this weekend is Sunday River.

With the last weekend of April 2021 (not counted the pandemic 2020 shutdown), this is the lowest amount of ski areas spinning since the heatwave spring of 2012. Go skiing and encourage ski areas to show that they are not spinning lifts in vain.

** Update, April 19, 9pm: Raining again today. Vallée-Bleue and Val St-Côme are throwing in the towel. Sugarbush is skipping their daily operations 2 days next week.

* Update, April 18, 5pm: Mont Édouard and Gore will be closed on Friday, but will open for one last weekend. Weather is a bit of a spoiler.

After a beautiful stretch of great weather for the preservation of spring skiing (ie. overnight freeze and/or snow), the mercury started raising above the daily averages last weekend followed by a few rainy days. This weather washed out the desire or abilities for a few ski areas of open last weekend. When the skies dried up, the East had lost over half of the still open ski resorts dropping down from 33 to 14 areas. The amount of ski areas still open two weekends ago was 91.

Half of the areas hoping to open this weekend for one last time this season. Four ski areas are made their intention clear and are eyeing to spin lifts into May. As we mentioned in my prelude of the annual Eastern Closing thread, despite the winterish weather that hit the East, for many it was all too little too late. Notwithinstanding the pandemic, the East has rarely seen so little areas still operating for the 3rd weekend in April, however there is a bit of optimism within mountain operations with 5 planning to offer so skiing in the month of May.

As usual, before heading out, check out the latest from ski areas to assure that they will be open; as seen last weekend, some areas might suspend operation if weather doesn’t cooperate.

Terrible winter weather wise until Spring came with cold temperature and snow to put a freeze and snow on the premature closing dates. Normally the Easter weekend is a goal to reach for many ski areas, however 2024’s Easter was early, but the Total Solar Eclipse in part of Eastern North America made an extra reason to try to attract skiers to what would have been a normally quiet Monday.

After a nice spell of weather for skiing, the stellar spring skiing is about to be hit with rain and well above temperature across the East. For example, Labrador’s Smokey Mountain decided to precede the terrible forecast and spin their lifts one last time on this Wednesday April 10. The list of ski areas might change quickly this weekend. Please verify ahead before heading to the hills.

*Update April 11, 12:30pm : It’s raining and warm here today and the forecast isn’t great for many this weekend. As stated just above, some hills are calling it quits. There is also a slight change on closing dates for Waterville and Stowe.

**Update April 12, 5:30pm : Updates from New York. Bellayre will only be open on Sunday. Sunday will also be last day at Whiteface. Searchmont ON has shutdown for the season with all the rain. A number of ski areas have decided not to open this weekend or Saturday and are tentative for Sunday. For some, it’s the end of season, for others, they are hoping to be able to spin at least one more time next weekend.

***Update April 13, 8pm : Mont Comi announced that Sunday April 14 will be their last day of the season.

Go skiing while you still can.

TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE SKIING

Besides the storm, a solar eclipse will pass occur on Monday. A number of ski areas are planning festivities around this rare astronomical event. Although not all location will be equal during this event, only a few will be in the part of totality.  More information in another post.

As mentioned above, this will be first time ever that anyone will be able to ride and ski the day of a Total Solar Eclipse in Eastern America. More on this below the list of open ski areas.

Easter is often used as the last ski event to attract people to the hills. This year part of Eastern North America will be on the path of a Total Solar Eclipse. More on this subject in a separate post. Here are the rare occurrence of total solar eclipses in part of the East:

July 10, 1972: Québec’s Gaspé peninsula and the Canadian Maritimes.

March 7, 1970: Southeast US, northeast to the Maritimes.

October 2, 1959: Northeastern Massachusetts/southern tip of New Hampshire.

++Update: April 6, 7:45am

Belle Neige won’t be holding their pipe jam, so they effectively closed for the season. Wildcat changed their closing date to this Sunday.

+Update: April 4, 4:20pm.

Powderhouse Hill ski area and Cranmore Mountain Resort are openning. For Powderhouse, it’s opening day for their season. Here is a fantastic quote:

You’ve waited long enough-

OPENING NIGHT IS TONIGHT! We have had a winter of disappointment and saying no, so tonight we say yes! Come tonight and ski from 7-9 pm. The conditions probably won’t last long so we are going to roll opening day festivities and closing day shenanigans into one evening.

5 bucks cash gets you on the slopes.

Yes, Really. We will be open tonight.

It wasn’t an easy season in the East; little snow and record warm weather. It would seem that Winter weather didn’t make an appearance until mid-March. Of course it was too late financially for most ski resorts and didn’t save some of them from early end to their season.

After a storm two weeks ago, another big storm where snow totals might be measured in feet in some part of the Northeast.

The cold weather has slowdown the early shutdown for many ski areas, this extra storm is actually big enough to make a change of plans reopen for this weekend.

The number ski options for first weekend of April is definitely below average since I started keeping track of closures.

Easter is often used as the last ski event to attract people to the hills. This year part of Eastern North America will be on the path of a Total Solar Eclipse. This will be first time ever that anyone will be able to ride and ski the day of a Total Solar Eclipse in Eastern America. More on this below the list of open ski areas. More on this subject in a separate post.

Happy skiing.

MASSACHUSETTS : 1

Berkshire East – April 7 (weekend only)

I normally post my list of open areas/closing date prior to the 1st weekend in April. April 1st being on a Monday, Easter Monday and day off for some, here is a previous of those that might open in April. Over two dozen ski areas are closing this weekend, while some others might make to April, if only to this Monday. A few of them have already mentioned that Monday April 1st was going to be their closing day.

Overall 2023-24 was the Winter that didn’t happen. Warmest winter on record in much, if not all, Eastern North America. Easter weekend is for some areas a benchmark to reach in their ski season; despite an early Easter, many feel short by a few weekends. The last storm and cold late March in part of the East has definitely save a few from closing in March. I’ll post a longer version when I officially started counting down the season prior to next weekend.

Last call for liftserved skiing in the East.

This is it, no more weekends left. One day or one evening at the traditional closers.

As mentioned in last weeks post, St-Sauveur will open tonight, for one last opening. Tonight, May 30 from 7pm to 11pm.

This Memorial Day weekend, Killington’s Superstar glacier was getting thin. K had scaled back it ambitions regarding offering on June weekend, now only hoping to get one more day in, either Saturday June 3rd or Thursday June 1st. Trying to avoid last year’s marginal conditions on Saturday June 4th opening.

The word came out, Killington will open one last time on Thursday June 1st.
